Word:Struggle
From merriam-webster.com
1: to make strenuous or violent efforts in the face of difficulties or opposition
2: to proceed with difficulty or with great effort
I chose struggle because of my own difficulties understanding and engaging in the experiment but also because it has a historic and cultural relevance for me that I associate with both collaboration and creativity in the African American tradition.
Movement:"Put you hands on your hips and let your back bone slip"
I chose this motion because it can be both playful and defiant. Which I think summarizes my effort in the collaborative.
This image is of Henrietta Lacks standing with her hands on her hips. The words come from a childhood rhyming game "Little Sallie Walker" that continues to be updated with each generation.

Hi Constance,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading what you chose for your artifacts.Funny I just wrote an email to Bill saying that I hope my project can be a bridge one that would embrace difference rather than thinking in polarities of an "Us" vs. "Them". I feel I have been struggling too to engage. I appreciate your honesty. I like that you acknowledge struggle also as one of strength and defiance. I love the movement. Also hand on the hips means an openness when reading body language. I like the idea of movement with a children's ditty.
Now if I could figure out a way to create something that uses our rubics...
Chanika
Hi Constance,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these artifacts with us. I love seeing Chanika's, too. It might really be nice to put these all together in the 'rubics cube' we originally envisioned...!
I like that you articulate your stance as "playful and defiant," a position that sounds honest, authentic, and complicated all at once to me. And I like that you're choosing a concrete term like 'struggle' against more metaphorical ideas (hands on hips; bridge).
Congrats on knocking out G1.
Thanks
Ryan
